The future of smart cities hinges on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation, revolutionizing urban landscapes into efficient and sustainable spaces. By harnessing the power of AI and driving innovation, cities can transform infrastructure management, transportation, energy consumption, governance, personalized services, environmental monitoring, and predictive maintenance. This will navigate the pioneering potential of AI and innovation in shaping the smart cities' development, highlighting how AI and advanced technology can enhance cities' capability in optimizing resource allocation, while address pressing urban challenges with data-driven decision-making. Specifically, we advocate five GREAT attributes for smart cities development, namely Green, Resilient, Empowering, Adaptable, and Transformative. In this talk, we will discuss the Sustainable Smart Campus (SSC) as a Living Lab initiative at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in driving smart cities development. We will provide specific examples of the learning behind and outcomes of a selected set of SSC projects implemented on our campus in the last few years.
